A Quarterly E-Newsletter, Summer 2013 Issue

Message from the CEO

Allison Coleman, CEO

On the eve of ACA implementation, many health centers are focusing attention on improving and strengthening their operations as a prelude to further growth.  Although Capital Link is best known for our efforts to assist health centers with planning and funding facilities, we have an equally important objective of conducting analysis and developing resources that help health centers improve their performance.  This issue of Capital Ink highlights recent research projects that have the goal of providing health centers with key indicators of financial and operational performance that influence current and future sustainability.

This spring, Capital Link completed a study sponsored by Blue Shield of California Foundation and the California HealthCare Foundation examining California clinic financial trends and highlighting strengths and weaknesses in their overall performance. The purpose of the research was to better understand the financial health of the California clinic safety net as well as those critical factors that may positively influence the development of high-performing health centers. A report containing detailed results will be released later this summer.

Capital Link is also working with our lending affiliate, Community Health Center Capital Fund (Capital Fund), on a series of studies sponsored by Citi Foundation on the financial and operational trends of the industry. The initial series, called "Community Health Center Financial Perspectives," offers a guide for lenders and health centers on the national financial and operational trends of community health centers from 2008-2011. These resources will also be available this summer.

As always, this issue contains a federal update, health center highlights, and links to new resources. We hope they are of help to you. We also invite you to join us at this year's NACHC Community Health Institute (CHI) & EXPO from August 23-27 in Chicago.
